MPBSI Faculty PKM, Makassar SMPN 53 Teachers Trained on Canva and Runway for Learning Innovation

UNISMUH.AC.ID, MAKASSAR — As part of the effort to improve the quality of technology-based education, 20 teachers from SMP Negeri 53 Makassar participated in a training on the use of digital learning media, Wednesday, May 28, 2025. The training focused on using the Canva and Runway platforms to design interactive and visual learning materials.

The event, which took place in the school environment, was an initiative of the Master of Indonesian Language and Literature Education (MPBSI) Postgraduate Program, Universitas Muhammadiyah (Unismuh) Makassar, aimed at serving the community. The implementation team consisted of Prof. Dr. Dra. Munirah, M.Pd., Dr. Haslinda, M.Pd., Dr. Abd. Munir, M.Pd., and Dewi Sartika.

In his opening remarks, the school welcomed the activity as a response to the need for teachers to adapt to the challenges of digital learning.

"The ability to create visually engaging learning media is highly relevant to the characteristics of modern students who are closely connected to the digital world," said Head of SMPN 53 Makassar, Drs. Kusnadi Idris M.Pd.

The training sessions lasted from morning to evening. The teachers were introduced to various Canva features for creating infographics and visual learning materials, as well as Runway as a media for producing AI-based learning videos. Each participant actively practiced creating learning materials and presented their results to their colleagues.

Prof. Munirah stated that mastering digital media is no longer an additional skill, but a basic necessity for teachers in the era of the Merdeka Curriculum.

"The ability of teachers to create visually engaging learning materials also determines student enthusiasm and learning outcomes," she said.

Based on the evaluation results, there was a 35% increase in the digital competence of the participants. The teachers also produced various learning products such as thematic infographics, short videos, and interactive presentations. They welcomed the proposal to establish a teacher learning community as a follow-up step.

The event was considered a best practice that should be replicated in other schools. Unismuh encourages similar training to be made a regular agenda, including in MGMP forums, to expand the impact of technology-based learning innovation in basic and secondary education.
